U-Pick Farms in Brentwood from End of May thru Sept
By Carrie Sullivan, our East Bay Epicurator I start looking forward to fruit-picking season in the fall – about 8 months before any of the fruit I love is ready! Call me obsessed. My favorite go-to area is Brentwood, located about 50 miles east of Oakland and Berkeley in East Contra Costa County. While I don’t exactly relish the drive to Brentwood, I have certainly found ways of making it more pleasurable, like taking the scenic back roads when I have the time, or making a day of it with at least one friend who shares my enthusiasm for fresh-picked (hand-picked and hand-chosen) fruit. Brentwood has seen some pretty massive…

Decorating a Gingerbread Dream House
Adults and children of all ages gathered at Autumn Express last night to channel their creativity into decorating gingerbread houses. Artist and gingerbread expert extraordinaire, Michele Simons, led the class in this festive holiday tradition. Michele had already taken care of the hard part – gluing the gingerbread walls together with royal icing to make a sturdy house – so we could jump right into the fun of decorating. With gumdrops, licorice, cereal, marshmallows, shredded coconut, gingerbread men, and much more, there were plenty of treats to work with (and nibble on). While we styled our houses, Michele gave us tips and inspiration for ways to use the decorations, like how to turn…

Michael Chiarello’s uniquely NapaStyle Culinary Program enlightens
By our Napa Valley Epicurator, Annette Hanami, The Wine Muse Napa Valley has its share of cooking classes with distinct approaches, some academic like at the CIA and many created to sell a particular vendor’s or vintner’s products. Michael Chiarello’s new NapaStyle Culinary Program in Yountville is unique in that it doesn’t feature his wines, recipes or even his products, of which there are many. The program is essentially an educational symposium around sustainable food that takes place on a weekly basis, featuring chefs, authors, growers, artisanal producers and vintners, all of whom share their own culinary passions and distinct POVs with guests. The new culinary program takes place every…

May 19th 2012 Food Revolution Day
The first annual Food Revolution Day was a great success: we raised awareness with a large audience of kids and adults, and hopefully inspired some change in their food habits, along with sharing better food and education. Thanks to everyone who came out to support it, and especially to CUESA for hosting the demos and Sprouts Cooking Club for creating our kids demo. Susie, Maya and I had so much fun working on this, giving tours, arranging demos and meeting everyone associated with it. We can’t wait for next year! Here’s the blog post written about the San Francisco Food Revolution Day by the lovely Shannon Longnecker of the Jamie…
