Food Adventures in Oaxaca, Mexico During Dia De Los Muertos
Oaxaca City teems with art, incredible foods, markets, shops, and plenty of bars with people watching. What lies outside of the city are the real treasures.
We took a day trip with Traditions Mexico Cultural Journeys aptly called “Daytour Tortilla! Food of the soul.” The group picked us up at our lovely little hotel (Las Golondrinas…check out the reviews) and narrated as we wound through the streets into the valley.
The best food tours are the ones that take you some place you could never access on your own.
That describes the dirt-floored cabana where we arrived for our tortilla experience.
We first watched blue corn tortilla demonstrations then tried our hands at making tortillas on wide, steaming outdoor griddles. Everyone must experience the scent of corn tortillas as they bake over an open flame. Then tasting them. It is Earth personified.
In addition to taking home our own freshly ground chocolate from the market in Teotitlan del Valle, the Oaxacan Coffee Company in Oaxaca City had a wonderful array of chocolate bars flavored with chile and other Mexican spices. Perfect little gifts, perfect munching.
Er, uh their thick, chocolatey mochas made with their house-made chocolate are a must.
